Birding equipment

birding in winterBird watching is a fascinating and relaxing activity. Some patience and a low profile will get you a long way. You can go out in to the fields or woods but quality times bird watching can easily be done in the back yard.
It’s perfectly fine to go out birding by yourself, but also with a friend, or in small groups with or without a guide can be a relaxing, and at times exciting experience. According to the location and the seasons, the world of birds is different every time. Because bird and nature reserves are vulnerable habitats, bird watching calls for caution, respect and restraint. You will be rewarded with an exciting insight into this complex bird world. Please treat your environment with respect to keep birding enjoyable for every party involved… including birds.

To get the best birding experience you will need some quality birding equipment and that’s what this website is about. I will try to make this website a good resource of information about birding equipment for any aspiring or veteran bird watcher.

The following is a list of the most essential birding equipment. Visit the links to get more in depth information.

The most important piece of birding equipment would be the binoculars.
A good set of binoculars to start with would have 10×50 as specifications. 10 is the amount of magnification and 50 stands for the lens diameter. While good binoculars can result in some quality spotting, the paramount of birding equipment would be the telescope.

Ofcourse you want to have a bird guide available to determine what kind of bird you spotted.
A small pocket sized classification guide will do. These guides typically give specific information like population numbers, the areas where certain birds occur and bird facts in general.
Do bring a notebook to write down anything of interest.

There’s not much to be said about clothing besides that for obvious reasons you don’t want to go out looking like a billboard. It’s important to keep a low profile as much as possible.
Keep in mind that you might end up somewhere quite far from any comfort and be prepared to deal with wet, cold or windy conditions. You will find that a substantial amount of pockets will come in quite handy to stash any birding equipment as you’ll need your hands to handle your binoculars for example.
Good footwear is always a must. Food and drinks can be quite a relief during long birding sessions but please do not litter the environment.

These few things will get you a long way at making your birding trip a success and you will quickly notice that the beautiful environment and it’s inhabitants make for a great picture. Therefore I personally think that bringing a good digital camera is a must. You’ll never know when a rare situation suddenly presents itself where you will be able to make fantastic photographs. With the photo camera and spotting scope as part of your birding equipment, you are also in the position to try out digiscopy. Digiscopy is digital photography using a scope to magnify the object.

In case you want to get a little bit more serious about birding then a bird hide or bird blind would also have to be part of your birding equipment.

Have a nice time looking around..
